Thank You Very Much for Your Time reproduces the language of the layoff and the job rejection and holds it up from two sides at once. To the person receiving it, the words land hollow, almost distant, sanitized, and final. To the institution sending it, the same words are carefully engineered and calibrated to keep distance, avoid liability, and move on cleanly. The appendix reframes the individual entirely, not as a person, but simply as a line in a ledger of rejections and layoffs, tracked alongside the others, with more entries still to come.
